Do Kwon – Terra-ble debater?

I remember the WSDC 2010 break vividly – yes, I was in attendance, but mostly because it was an emotional roller-coaster as Team Hong Kong went from feeling that we’d been knocked-out, to discovering that it was mathematically possible for us to break, to nervous waiting (because tabs weren’t as quick or as public in those days) when our back of the envelope calculations put us in a multi-way tie for the final few spots that would come down entirely to speaker scores.

I mention it, because whilst Team Hong Kong broke in 16th by the skin of our teeth (and then promptly lost to top-breaking Australia), Team South Korea lost out on breaking by a mere 2.5 speaker points, coming in 17th, with 5 wins, 16 ballots and 6072.0 speaker points. As an individual speaker, Do Hyeong again spoke in 6 of the 8 rounds, hitting an average speaks of 72.917 (the highest on Team South Korea) on the way to ranking as the 33rd Best Speaker and 4th Best ESL Speaker.

Do Hyeong did double duty in the WSDC 2010 R6 impromptu against Canada, on the motion that THBT the developing world should prioritize economic development before environmental protection. He got both the first and last word, serving as first and reply in South Korea’s 0-3 loss.

Closer to home, Do Hyeong co-captained the Daewon debate team for the 2008-20107 academic years. That was also the context for my first encounter, when we both attended the Asian Schools Debate Championship 2009 in Manila, Philippines. The sole Daewon team, of which he was a member, was on a march through the preliminary rounds, winning all 7 debates for a perfect clean sheet and a tournament high 1899.5 speaker points. Do Hyeong topped the tab as joint-Best Speaker (averaging 77.71 speaks), joined at the top of the leader board by a fellow Daewon/WSDC team member. In fact, Daewon took the top three speaker spots! Alas, the team’s run ended in the quarter finals.
