WSDC 2016 – Motions

A hopefully comprehensive list of the motions used at WSDC 2016. These have been compiled quite after-the-fact, so there may well be inaccuracies in the spelling or wording, my apologies in advance if this is the case. Feel free to comment if there are errors you notice and I’ll correct them as best as possible.

NEAO 2015 [MOTIONS]

Motions for the 2015 North-East Asia Open on 13-17 November 2015.
Any errors in transcription are mine and mine alone. I am particularly unsure about wording for Open QF, ESL Pre-Semi.
And for the sake of clarity, these motions are not my work. Credit goes to a far more competent and skilled AdjCore team.

R1: THW make all State benefits for local religious institutions (eg. tax exemptions) contingent on their religious leaders being democratically elected by their congregations.

R2: THBT it is in Taiwan’s intrest to abandon polices that support independence.

R3: THBT all art should be published anonymously.

R4: THR shonen manga’s common emphasis on competing to be the strongest.
[INFO: Shonen manga (literally meaning “young boys” comics) is a genre of Japanese manga marketed at adolescents. Famous examples of shonen manga include Dragon Ball, Naruto, One Piece and Slam Dunk.
In Dragon Ball, two ofthe main characters are Goku and Vegeta, who are constantly training, and fighting each other as rivals, in order to be the most powerful warriro.
In Slam Dunk, the main characters are basketball players, who work extremely hard and are determined to be the best in Japan.)

R5: THW make it mandatory for children of middle and upper class families to experience the condition of families below the poverty line for a period of time as their education.

Open QF, ESL Pre-Semi: You are in an emotionally fulfilling but sexually frustrating relationship. THW hire a prostitute.

Open SF, ESL SF: THS the European Community’s act to label products made in Israeli settlements on occupied Palestinian and Syrian land.

EFL GF: THBT people should be legally allowed to hurt themselves and others as much as they want, as long as there is legally established consent and there are no additional harms to third parties.

GF: THBT NGO’s which attempt to garner humanitarian support for post-colonial states should, in their campaigns, advertsing and brochures etc., link the States present suffering to past acts of Western colonialism.

The Hong Kong Parliamentary Debating Society’s Summer Workshop 2015 has recently concluded. For me personally HKPDS has now gone full circle from 07′-09′ as a participant, to 12′ and 15′ as assistant trainer and trainer. Excellent improvements in the short span of one week from all the participants of course, and really glad I could see it happen.

2nd AWSDC 2014 [MOTIONS]

Motions for the 2nd Asia World Schools Debating Championships held in Thailand as official released in regards to the preliminary and out rounds.

R1: THB in a citizen’s right to bear arms.
R2: THBT liberal democracies should adopt educational policies at creating a less religious population.
R3: THW not give prominent entertainment awards to artists who have committed crimes of violence.
R4: THW give more votes to citizens who regularly donate a substantial proportion of their income to respectable charitable causes.
R5: THW give a doctors, not parents, the final say over all medical decisions concerning children.
R6: THW force all advertising to provide only technical product details and require that all products be sold in plain packages.
R7: THBT living below the poverty line should be the absolute defense to acquisitive crimes.
R8: THB the LGBT rights movement should abandon the claim that sexuality is not a choice.
OF: THW make the income tax of the richest proportional to the level of economic inequality.
QF: THBT the US should withdraw all military aid from Israel until the end of the occupation in Gaza.
SF: TH believes in the universal right to internet access.
GF: THBT when leaders of capable states turn away refugees, the ICC should prosecute them for crimes against humanity.

Asian Schools Debating Championship 2014 [MOTIONS]

Motions for the 2014 Asian Schools Debating Championships, hosted by Sri KDU, Kota Damansara, Selangor, Malaysia from 2-9 June 2014 as made public by the Adjudication Core at https://www.facebook.com/groups/asdc2014/.

R1: Education
THW allocate school places solely on geographical proximity and not other criteria such as intelligence, ability or talent
THS the creation of exclusive schools for students that identify as LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer/questioning)
TH regrets the narrative in education that success in life is contingent on one’s level of academic achievement

R2: Media
THW ban all media reporting on suicides.
THW remove all songs with anti-minority lyrics from public free-to-air radio.
THBT peacekeeping forces should not be obligated to protect war correspondents behind enemy lines.

R3: USA
THBT the United States should not have engaged in a prisoner swap with the Taliban.
THBT the United States should publicly extend support to the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood.
THBT the United States should, given a choice between the two, focus on engaging India rather than China.
