The 3rd Thailand World Schools Debating Championships has officially begun with its first full day of activities here in Bangkok. Most of the 28 competing teams arrived yesterday (22 Aug), staying at two hotels near Anglo Singapore International School’s new campus where the competition is being hosted. The school is new in the sense that it was opened within the last few days and that construction is still ongoing on a second building just next door.
This morning (23 Aug) saw the adjudicators briefing, debaters briefing and adjudication test. It is anticipated that adjudicators will get their test back tomorrow prior to the commencement of Round 1. Teams were given free time after lunch, with most teams choosing to use the time to prepare for the next days debates.
Dinner and the opening ceremony both took place on a cruise down the Chao Phraya River. There were some issues with missing teams that delayed the cruise, in addition to just a generally rather long wait between meeting times and things actually happening. Nevertheless, the food was quickly consumed and was followed by a number of performances ranging from folk dance to singing.
Buses were not available for most of today with the exception of travel to and from the opening ceremony, and it seems they will be out of action until the third day of proceedings. Although this and long waiting times have been a source of some discomfort, the rather spacious schedule means that neither has so far caused any particular problems.
Tomorrow will see the first day of debating, a full day of debating at that, with Round 1, 2 and 3 beginning at 8am.
