WSDC 2011 – Schedule


This is part of the WSDC 2011 series as I recount and report on the World School Debating Championship 2011 in Dundee, Scotland as a debater, blogger and Wales national team member.

Although WSDC 2011 organizers have already put up a schedule of events on the official website, a slightly more detailed version of events can be found on the WSDC 2011 Team Registration page. Please see my post for HKSDC to get the full details on registration for WSDC 2011.

The latest WSDC 2011 Schedule of Events is:

  • 16 Aug 2011
    • Delegate Registration
    • Arrival Dinner at the University of Dundee
  • 17 Aug 2011
    • Adjudicator Training – For adjudicators only
    • Tours of Dundee – For debaters and other adults
      • Tours will occur in two groups
      • One group will first visit:
        • Frigate Unicorn – wooden warship launched in 1824
        • RRS Discovery – research vessel which was trapped in the Antarctic icecap for 2 years 1902-04
        • The newly refurbished McManus art gallery
        • Dundee Contemporary Arts centre
      • The other group will visit:
        • Camperdown Wildlife Centre – our own mini zoo
        • Broughty Ferry – former fishing village, now a suburb of Dundee. It has a beach and a castle!
        • Dundee Law – extinct volcano in the centre of the city, whence there is a wonderful panoramic view
        • University of Dundee Botanic Garden
      • The two groups will swap after lunch
    • Opening Ceremony and Dinner hosted by Lord Provost John R Letford in the Bonar Hall, University of Dundee.

    • Rounds 1 and 2 in Dundee schools and Webster’s HS.
    • BBQ hosted by the University of Dundee
  • 19 Aug 2011
    • Rounds 3 and 4 in Dundee schools and Webster’s HS.
    • Evening Reception hosted by Dundee College.
  • 20 Aug 2011
    • Welcome ceremony of sorts will be held at George Heriot’s School including refreshments and a pipe band
    • Round Zero in George Heriot’s School, Edinburgh
    • Edinburgh – Escorted tours in the afternoon by pupils of George Heriot’s School and Craigmount High School
    • Supper at George Heriot’s School, Edinburgh
  • 21 Aug 2011
    • Rounds 5 and 6 at the High School of Dundee.
    • Free Evening
  • 22 Aug 2011
    • Rounds 7 and 8 in Dundee schools and Webster’s HS.
    • Break Night Party at the Mono Night Club, University of Dundee.
  • 23 Aug 2011
    • Octo-finals in Dundee Schools.
    • Optional Tours of the Area.
    • Scottish Country Dance Practice in the evening
  • 24 Aug 2011
    • Quarter-finals in HM Frigate Unicorn, RRS Discovery, Baxter Park Pavilion and Al-Maktoum Institute.
    • Semi-finals at the University of Dundee.
    • Ifthar hosted by Al-Maktoum Institute
  • 25 Aug 2011
    • World Council Meeting at the City Chambers, Dundee
    • Grand Final, Dinner and Closing Ceremony in the Caird Hall, Dundee
    • Ceilidh at the Marryat Hall (adjacent to Caird Hall)
    • Disco at the Mono Night Club, University of Dundee.

    1. In WSDC, Round Zero is an additional round when the competition has an odd number of teams. In Round Zero, the 8 teams that sat out one of the other preliminary rounds will debate each other to ensure every team has 8 debates.
      In other competitions, Round Zero is sometimes used as a practice round for adjudicators, debators and also to begin powerpairing.
