I found the article very intersting. Perhaps, the fault in the hypothesis is not that it is false but that you said it is releasing emotion rather than expressing. When you express emotions such as joy (through tears or otherwise) it builds up the ecstacy thus increasing happiness. I think the hypothesis is correct.

I’m afraid I wasn’t at the debate myself, and the video hasn’t included the adjudicators feedback so on this ocassion it might be a bit difficult.
There are however, other videos online which include the oral adjudication part.

Yes, the tab is different. The initial announcement had some errors which the CAP has been double checking and correcting in the past few weeks, hence the delay in the official release of the EFL and ESL tabs.

Entirely valid point. I based this method on 2009 (http://www.schoolsdebate.com/years/2009/tab_rankings.pdf) where the ballots in the out-rounds weren’t included. No future year has given a re-ranking of teams.
Certainly there is a valid argument to say that teams that gain extra ballots in the out-rounds should ‘rank’ higher. Perhaps this is something to be considered for WSDC 2014. Perhaps a less numerical system amongst the Top 16 would bring better peace of mind.
To be honest, I think it makes little difference what the precise number is. A quarter-finalist is a quarter-finalist. To reach whatever stage of the out-rounds that Teams do, is an achievement in itself that ought to be celebrated.

Because if we are going off of wins and ballots then we should include the elim rounds wins and ballots as well. Why is this not the way that it is done?

So why don’t the ballots from the elimination rounds count as well in the final tabulation. That would seem to make more sense if we are basing it on elims also.

Paul. That is not correct. the final ranking of teams does depend on how far one got in the out rounds, but in any case Mexico finished ahead of Peru after the prelims…

I’m not sure about Husan. The official tab isn’t out yet. As with ESL, I can’t confirm that either. But that’s what was tweeted by people at the ceremony. It’s not based on how far they reach in the out-rounds, but rather dependent on their performance in the preliminary rounds.
